"If officials had paid heed to people's complaint against the wall, 17 lives would not have been lost" - Senior Communist leader, R. Mutharasan

Coimbatore: State Secretary of Communist Party of India, R. Mutharasan at a press meet held at the party office in Coimbatore recalled the petition filed by his party urging demolition of the wall which claimed the lives of 17 people in Nadur in Mettupalayam.

Coimbatore: State Secretary of Communist Party of India, R. Mutharasan at a press meet held at the party office in Coimbatore recalled the petition filed by his party urging demolition of the wall which claimed the lives of 17 people in Nadur in Mettupalayam.

"Had the officials responded to the petition and analysed the gravity of the issue, today we would not have lost those 17 people. Granting solatiums cannot compensate lives. More than the wall, it was official apathy that lead to the tragedy. If the officials had acted upon the petitions filed by the people against the wall, the tragedy would have been averted", opined the senior communist leader.

He also cited the petition filed on November 13 by his party men which had 60 signatures of the people seeking demolition of the wall. "Action on Municipality Commissioner and Tahsildhar should be taken for negligence", he urged.

"In this scenario, CM Edapadi Palanisamy who visited the victims on Tuesday brushed the truth and asserted that the government had not received any petitions or complaints with regard to the wall. He further went on to allege DMK President Stalin of politicising the tragedy", he alleged.

"To cover up the mistakes and mute the allegations putforth by the victim's family, the government ordered lathi charge against the protestors, which is unethical", he said.

"Furthermore shocking and undemocratic is the cremation of the bodies by police and the revenue department. Why should the families be resteicted from performing last rites to their beloved ones?", questioned the Senior Communist leader.

He revealed that there is another wall built in Nadur area near the stream close to Adidravidar colony. "At least this wall should be demolished before any untoward incident happens", he stressed.
